reading listI'm a bit of an avid reader, so at any given time I might have 2-3 books going. For grins, I thought I'd share my most recent list of books I've plowed through. You'll probably notice a whole pile of Packt Publishing books as I have a PacktLib subscription, which rocks if you use any number of open source systems. Yeah, they are pretty much all over the map. And yes, I read them from cover-to-cover. In case you want to find out more about any of the books listed below, I took the liberty of leveraging a combination of Drupal modules to link my entries to Amazon so you can see more info on them. Gotta love Drupal... Pro GitFigured I'm about to get thrown to the wolves with Git repo management on a large project, so I've got to get up to speed on this quickly. Not to mention I get sick of my tech lead sending me links to the online book every time I have a Git question... MockingjayGot to say, the ending was a bit darker than I expected, and wrapped up very quickly - almost like the editors had said, "enough!" Or like some of Neal Stephenson's books. Overall a much deeper read than I had expected from a series targeted at tweens. I said it. Some of the interesting - and obvious - symbolisms regarding the good vs evil motif:
The movie? If you've read the books, the movie wound up being a huge disappointment... If you haven't read the books and see the movie - well, you'll probably be lost. So much promise... The Hunger GamesYeah, yeah, yeah... My sister loaned me the trilogy, figured what the heck - free reading, right? Never turn down free books... So far not badly written, often words longer than four letters are used so it makes for better reading than most pulp fiction out there these days. Interesting back story for the dystopian world it's set in, so I'm intrigued. Best of all - NO VAMPIRES OR WEREWOLVES/LYCANS!!! A Fighting Man of MarsGetting close to the end of the series. Each is unique, but the plot of almost all of them is:
Depending on how the next one goes, I might take a break from the Barsoom series as they are starting to get a little long in the tooth there... Drupal 7 Multi-sites ConfigurationI was interested in seeing how D6 and D7 differ in how they solve the multisite problem, and this proved to be an interesting skim read on the topic. The Master Mind of MarsSixth book, and a new Earth character is introduced, another fighting man from a different era. I'm also cheap, so didn't go the Amazon route on this one, choosing to snag it from a free source in .mobi format. Thuvia, Maid of MarsFourth book in the Barsoom series. Thank God these are all free Kindle editions or my reading habit would be breaking me this month! |
